The generator drafts a notice of race and sailing instructions from what you have already set up: the event's dates and venue, its classes and handicap systems, the schedule, and the scoring. The draft follows the structure of RRS Appendix J and of the US Sailing NoR and SI Guides (March 2025), in original wording. You edit it, then publish it.
Open the event's Documents tab in the race office and choose Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions under "Write a document".
What it fills in
From the event: title, dates, venue, organizing authority, time zone, and the official notice board's address. From the classes: the classes and divisions, the handicap systems, and entry eligibility. From the schedule: the dates and the time of the first warning signal each day. From the scoring settings: the scoring system, the number of races needed to make a series, and the discards.
Anything the generator cannot know, such as the protest time limit if you change it, the course diagrams, or the venue's berthing rules, appears as a marked gap for you to complete. The Checks panel lists every gap by name, starting with the items RRS Appendix J requires, so you can see what is left before you publish. A gap you publish anyway shows as a highlighted placeholder in the public document.
Conventions you will see
The draft uses the guides' conventions, so a competitor who has read other notices will recognise them.
- [DP] marks a rule whose penalty is at the protest committee's discretion.
- [NP] marks a rule a boat cannot protest another boat for breaking.
- References read RRS 61.1, NoR 7 and SI 12.
- Paragraphs that Appendix J requires are marked until you publish, so you can see what you must not delete.
Edit, then publish
Edit any paragraph. Remove the optional ones that do not apply. The generator renumbers the paragraphs and cross-references when you save, so deleting paragraph 6 does not leave a gap.
Publishing creates a numbered version of the document, dated and listed on the event's Documents tab, and shows it as HTML that prints cleanly on A4 or Letter. Announce it on the notice board if your competitors watch the board. You can also upload a PDF instead of using the generator.
Changing a published document
A published version is never edited in place. Make the change as an amendment: it is numbered, dated, posted to the official notice board automatically, and listed with the document it changes, so a competitor can see every change since the version they read. For a larger rewrite, start a new version instead. See the notice board and amendments.
The rules text
The generator cites rules by number and does not reproduce the Racing Rules of Sailing, which are World Sailing's copyright. Competitors can read each rule in plain language on the rules reference, which links to World Sailing's official text.
