Match racing is scored by matches won, not by points from places. Appendix C changes the racing rules for umpired match racing, and the event's format sets how matches are grouped.
Choose Match racing as the class's scoring format on the race office's Class scoring tab, and set the stage (round robin or knockout) and, for a knockout, the points needed to win.
Format
- Round robin: each team sails every other team. A win scores one point, and the ranking is by wins. Ties are broken as the sailing instructions say, usually by the result between the tied teams.
- Knockout: pairs sail until one team reaches the number of wins the stage requires.
- Events commonly run a round robin to seed a knockout. Score each stage as its own class, and enter the places from the earlier stage when you set up the next one. Sail-offs and draws for a tie are run by the race committee and entered as results.
Entering results
Enter each match as a race between two teams and record the winner. Penalties are signalled on the water by umpires and are reflected in who finished first. A match that is not sailed can be scored as a win for one team, or resailed, at the race committee's decision.
Hearings
Most decisions are made on the water by the umpires. The protest system is still available for the requests Appendix C leaves to a hearing, such as redress.
