Scoring is set per class. Before entering a single finish, decide how the fleet divides and how each division is scored, because those choices decide which boats are compared with which.
Classes and splits
A class is a group of boats scored together. It can be a one-design fleet (J/70), a handicap division (PHRF A), or a split of either (J/70 Corinthian, PHRF 1 and PHRF 2). Each class has a name and an optional division label, and the two are shown together on results.
A boat can be entered in more than one class. A typical case is a PHRF boat that is also scored in a combined ORC fleet, or a one-design boat scored in both the open and Corinthian standings. Each class scores its own races from the same finishes.
Races and starts
Each race on the Races tab lists the classes that sail it (the page calls this the race's circle assignment), so one class can sail more races than another. Starts are recorded per race for each class or for several classes sharing a start, so a general recall for one start changes only the classes in it.
The scoring settings for each class
Open the Class scoring tab in the race office. Each class has:
| Setting | What it decides |
|---|---|
| Scoring format | Appendix A low point, high point, bonus point, a medal race, qualifying and final fleets, a discipline appendix (B to F), college |
| Handicap system | One design, or the rating system used to correct times |
| Races required for a series | How many races must be completed for the series to count |
| Discard schedule | How many races are excluded, and after how many races |
| Races that must count | Races that can never be discarded, such as a medal race or a long-distance race |
| Use starting-area count (A5.3) | Whether boats that came to the starting area but did not finish are scored on the number that came, not the number entered |
| SI scoring penalty, TLE and STP | The sailing instructions' own penalty for SCP, a finishing-window score, and custom standard penalties |
Each choice is explained beside it as you make it, with the rule or appendix it comes from. A class you have not configured is scored under Appendix A low point, with the discards and A5.3 option set on the Ratings tab.
Set these to match your notice of race. The NoR and SI generator prefills its scoring paragraphs from the event's discard and A5.3 options, not from each class's format, so when a class uses another format (high point, a medal race, an appendix) write its scoring paragraph yourself and read the published document against the class settings.
Ratings
For a handicap class, each boat needs a rating in the class's system. The scorer enters each rating, or imports an ORC certificate, and reviews it before it is used. Lock ratings before the first race so a late edit cannot quietly change results. See handicap systems explained.
Check the arithmetic before race one
Use the scoring preview to try options against sample finishes. The preview shows each boat's points, the discard, and the tie-break path, and nothing it shows is published.
