Medal races

Score a final medal race for the leading boats, with the points rules the NoR usually sets.

A medal race is a short final race for the boats leading the opening series, usually the top ten. It is scored as part of the series but under its own rules, which your notice of race must state.

Setting it up

On the race office's Class scoring tab, choose Opening series and medal race as the class's format and set:

  • how many boats qualify from the opening series (ten by default);
  • the opening series' own options: discards, A5.3 and the races required.

The medal race scores double points and cannot be discarded, as the World Sailing medal race format sets. Create it as a race for the class and mark it as the medal race in its race inputs. Only the qualifying boats sail it; the rest keep their opening-series positions below the medal race boats.

This is the single double-points medal race. A first-to-win medal ladder, as iQFOiL and Formula Kite use, is not available.

How the series is scored

Each qualifying boat's series score is its opening-series score plus its medal race points. Boats that did not qualify are ranked after every medal race boat, in their opening-series order. When two medal race boats tie on points, the medal race place decides it, as most NoRs require. Resolve any tie for the last medal race place before the medal race is sailed.

When the medal race is not sailed

If the medal race cannot be sailed, the opening-series ranking stands. Check your NoR for any different arrangement before the last day.
