Appendix J Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions

What a notice of race and sailing instructions must contain, and what they may contain.

Appendix J is the checklist behind every notice of race and set of sailing instructions. World Sailing's online NoR and SI Guides (formerly Appendices K and L) turn it into template wording. Saildex's document generator follows this structure.

Key points

J1 Notice of race contents

Always: the event's title, place, dates and organizing authority; that the racing rules govern; any other governing documents and where to find them; the classes and handicap systems, with any entry restrictions; entry procedure and fees; and the time of the first warning signal. When they apply: changes to racing rules, advertising, prescriptions, qualifying and final series, equipment inspection, scoring and discard arrangements, prizes, the score freeze in rule 90.3(e), and more.

J2 Sailing instruction contents

Always: the location of the official notice board or online board, how changes are communicated, the schedule, courses and marks, starting and finishing lines, time limits, and the protest and redress procedure with time limits and hearing place. When they apply: signals made ashore, starting penalties, penalty system, scoring, safety, support boats and many more.

Changed in 2025

The notice of race must now state when rule 90.3(e) (score freeze) applies, and sailing instructions may set the direction for crossing the finishing line.
