Appendix B Windsurfing Fleet Racing Rules

Windsurfing fleet racing, including marathon races longer than an hour. Applies when the notice of race says so.

Appendix B adapts the rules to boards. The word "boat" elsewhere in the rules means board. Several definitions change: a board's tack is set by which hand would be nearer the mast in normal sailing position, mark-room is room to sail a proper course round the mark, and the zone is deleted (rule 18 switches on when a board is rounding or passing).

Key points

B2 Part 2 changes

A tack ends when the sail fills, not at close-hauled. Rule 17 becomes a reaching-start rule for the last 30 seconds. Mark-room is decided when the first board starts rounding or passing. Capsized or aground boards must not interfere, and in the last minute before the start a board must have her sail out of the water unless she capsized by accident.

B3 Starting systems

Three systems: a conventional upwind start, a reaching start with a red, yellow and green flag sequence, and beach starts from numbered stations. Touching a mark is allowed; holding on to it is not. The Z flag rule is deleted.

B4 Propulsion and penalties

Pumping and fanning the sail are permitted; paddling, swimming and walking are not. The on-the-water penalty is a single 360-degree turn with no tack or gybe required. A drinking container up to 1.5 litres may be worn.

B5 Protests in elimination series

In elimination races that qualify for a later stage, protests and redress requests can be made orally after the race, decided quickly, and are not appealable. A board protesting must tell the race committee after finishing.

B8 Scoring

One discard from 5 to 11 races, two from 12. Ties are broken first on discarded scores, then on all scores best to worst, then on the last race. In elimination races a non-finisher scores the number of boards allowed in that race.
