A class is scored under one format. The format decides how a race result becomes points and how races become a series. Handicap correction, if any, happens first and produces the finishing order the format scores.
Choose the format on the race office's Class scoring tab. Each option below is shown there with the rule it comes from and what it means for the class.
Fleet racing
| Format | Race score | Series |
|---|---|---|
| Appendix A low point | Place = points: first scores 1, second 2 | Lowest total wins |
| High point | Points fall from a maximum by place | Highest total wins |
| Bonus point | Low point with extra points off for the leading places (in the traditional table: first 0, second 3, third 5.7, fourth 8, fifth 10, sixth 11.7, then place plus 6) | Lowest total wins |
Options for every fleet format:
- Discards: a schedule of how many races are excluded after how many have been sailed, for example one discard after four races and two after eight.
- A5.3: score non-finishers on the boats that came to the starting area.
- Races to make a series: the minimum number of races for the series to be valid.
Series structures
- Single series: every race counts towards one ranking.
- Qualifying and final series: groups during qualifying, then final fleets ranked in order. Set whether qualifying points carry forward and how discards apply. See the qualifying and final series guide.
- Medal race: a final race for the leading boats, with a points multiplier and its own discard rule. See the medal races guide.
Discipline appendices
| Appendix | Discipline | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| B | Windsurfing | Fleet racing and heat elimination ladders; its own tie-breaks |
| C | Match racing | Round robins scored by wins; knockouts by matches won |
| D | Team racing | Race won by the team with the lower total of places; round robins by wins |
| E | Radio sailing | Heats with promotion and relegation |
| F | Kiteboarding | Fleet racing and heat elimination series |
Team and combined scoring
- College two-division: A and B division scored separately; a school's total is the sum.
- Club team: a club's score is the sum of its best boats (three by default), chosen race by race or over the series, for team trophies within a fleet event.
- Subclass results: separate standings for part of a fleet, such as Corinthian or masters boats, either keeping their fleet points or re-scored among themselves as the SI says.
Tie-breaks
Unless the format sets its own, series ties are broken under A8. See scoring codes and points.
