Handicap systems

The time correction each rating system applies, the rating inputs it needs, and the race inputs the race committee sets.

Corrected time decides the finishing order for a handicap class (A3). These are the corrections applied. E is elapsed time in seconds, C corrected time, D the course length in nautical miles. For an introduction to choosing between systems, see handicap systems explained.

Choose a class's system on the race office's Class scoring tab. Each system asks for the rating fields below on each boat, and for its race inputs on each race.

System Rating input Correction Race input
One design None C = E; or finishing order only None
PHRF time on distance Seconds per mile R C = E − R × D Course length
PHRF time on time Seconds per mile R C = E × A / (B + R) Constants A and B for the fleet
PHRF triple number Low, medium and high (or distance) ratings As above, with the band chosen Band per race
PHRF pursuit Seconds per mile R Start (R_slowest − R) × D after the slowest boat; finishing order is the result Course length
ORC GPH General Purpose Handicap, seconds per mile C = E − GPH × D Course length
ORC time on time Inshore or offshore ToT C = E × ToT Which number
ORC triple number Low, medium and high ToT or ToD ToT or ToD with the band chosen Band per race
ORC performance curve Certificate polar allowances Implied wind from the course; ranked by implied wind Course legs, or a course type
ORC Club As ORC, from a Club certificate As the ORC option chosen As the ORC option chosen
ORR Factors by course type and wind; GPH C = E × factor, C = E − factor × D, or GPH time on distance Course type, wind band
ORR-EZ 6 × 6 grid of course model and wind band, with non-spinnaker variants; GPH C = E × factor, or GPH time on distance Course model, wind band
IRC Time Correction Coefficient (TCC) C = E × TCC None
CSA Time-on-time factor C = E × factor None
Portsmouth (US D-PN) Number N C = E × 100 / N None
Portsmouth (RYA PN) Number N C = E × 1000 / N None
Portsmouth, laps Number N, on either scale Elapsed time averaged per lap, then corrected as above Laps sailed
SCHRS Time dividing factor C = E / rating None
Texel Texel rating TR C = E × 100 / TR None
MOCRA Time-on-time factor C = E × factor None
Organizer ToT or ToD A factor, or seconds per mile C = E × factor, or C = E − R × D Course length for ToD
Organizer expression A number per boat A formula the scorer writes from elapsed time, rating and distance As the formula needs

Rounding

Each system rounds as its own rule says: some round corrected times to the nearest second, others keep full precision. The class settings say which applies. Ties on corrected time share the points for the places involved (A7).

Mixed systems in one event

Each class has one system. A boat that holds certificates in several systems can be entered in a class for each. Ratings are stored per boat per system, so the same boat can be PHRF 96 in one class and IRC 1.012 in another.

Ratings and locking

The scorer enters each rating, or imports an ORC certificate, and reviews it: a rating stays proposed until it is accepted, and only accepted ratings are scored. Lock a class's ratings before racing; changes after the lock are recorded and need the scorer's role.

HPR and NHC are not offered.
