Scoring codes and points

Every scoring code Saildex Regattas records, what it means, and the points it scores under Appendix A.

The codes are those of RRS Appendix A10, plus TLE from the SI Guide's finishing-window option. Points below are for Appendix A low-point scoring. "Entries" means the number of boats entered in the series, as A5.2 counts them, unless the notice of race says otherwise.

Code Meaning Points
DNC Did not start, and did not come to the starting area Entries + 1
DNS Did not start, for a reason other than DNC or OCS Entries + 1, or as A5.3 if adopted
OCS On the course side at the start and did not start correctly, or broke rule 30.1 As DNS
ZFP 20% penalty under rule 30.2 Finishing place plus 20% of the DNF score, under rule 44.3(c)
UFD Disqualified under rule 30.3 As DSQ
BFD Disqualified under rule 30.4 As DSQ
SCP Took a scoring penalty under rule 44.3(a) As the NoR or SIs say; otherwise place plus 20% of the DNF score, never worse than DNF
NSC Did not sail the course Entries + 1; boats behind move up
DNF Did not finish Entries + 1, or as A5.3 if adopted
RET Retired Entries + 1, or as A5.3 if adopted
DSQ Disqualified Entries + 1, or as A5.3 if adopted; boats behind move up
DNE Disqualification that cannot be excluded under rule 90.3(b) DSQ points, never discarded
DGM Disqualification for gross misconduct DSQ points, never discarded
RDG Redress given As the protest committee decided
DPI Discretionary penalty imposed As the protest committee decided
TLE Finished outside the finishing window set in the SIs As the SIs say, commonly the last boat to finish within the window plus one or two

How the points are worked out

  • Penalty percentages are 20% of the DNF score, rounded to the nearest tenth of a point (0.05 rounds up), and are added to the boat's finishing place. A boat with a ZFP or SCP does not move any other boat.
  • A5.3, when the notice of race adopts it, scores a boat that came to the starting area but did not start, did not finish, retired or was disqualified at one more than the number of boats that came to the starting area. DNC stays at entries + 1.
  • Boats behind move up for DSQ, NSC and RET after finishing: they take the places the excluded boat would have had. Redress does not move other boats.
  • Ties in a race share the points for the places involved, averaged (A7).
  • Discards exclude a boat's worst scores as the notice of race sets. DNE and DGM can never be excluded. Of two equal worst scores, the earlier race is excluded.
  • Series ties are broken under A8: compare each boat's race scores from best to worst, excluding discards; if still tied, compare the last race, then the race before, including discards.

Codes that are not RRS codes

STP is not an A10 code. If your sailing instructions define a standard penalty, turn on custom STP decisions in the class's scoring settings and record the points the SI sets for each STP. For any other penalty the codes above do not cover, use a points adjustment. Kiteboarding classes also use DCT, from Appendix F.

TLE needs the class's finishing-window setting: the SI's choice of one or two places after the last boat that finished within the window, and whether DNF boats are scored the same way.

Redress

Redress (RDG) follows A9 unless the protest committee decides otherwise. The options are the average of all the boat's other race scores, the average of the races before the one in question (both to a tenth of a point, 0.05 rounding up), or points for the position the boat held when the incident happened. Every RDG score shows which option was applied.
